About the event

Dr. Jennifer Deakins will go into detail on the aspects of Texas optometry law related to glaucoma, specifically highlighting the changes in the new scope of practice law passed in 2021. The lecture also looks at updated clinical practice recommendations of the American Optometric Association and American Academy of Ophthalmology that use up-to-date evidence to guide diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

Dr. Tommy Lucas will give Texas optometrists an overview of new managed care laws in Texas - both health plan and vision plan laws - that affect their practices and patient benefits. It is intended to overview how the law was crafted, advocated for, passed through the Legislature, and how it is currently being enforced. The mechanisms for enforcement through the Texas Department of Insurance will be overviewed, including what constitutes an appropriate complaint and how to file a complaint. These issues largely affect practice management and patient navigation of benefits for any practice that accepts health insurance plans or vision plans.
